67 teams of operators and designers from 17 countries from all five continents competed for the AWARD. Participation was limited to facilities completed between 1995 and 2000, which had therefore been in operation for at least two years.
The ten-strong Jury composed of members of the IOC and IAKS - architects, engineers, landscape designers and sports scientists - met in Cologne from 10th to 12th July 2003. The Chairman was Erhard Tränkner, Honorary President of the Federation of German Architects (BDA). The IOC was represented by Ching-Kuo Wu, architect and personal IOC member from Taiwan.
The Jury awarded 3 Gold, 12 Silver and 7 Bronze medals as well as conferring 5 Special Distinctions.

The projects were assessed according to their functional and design quality, with consideration also being given to their integration in the urban or natural landscape and to environmental needs. The assessment also took account of the various social, technical and climatic conditions in the various countries.
The prizes were be presented on 5th November 2003 during the opening of the 18th IAKS Congress in conjunction with the trade fair Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities (FSB) (5th to 7th November 2003) in Cologne.
All the winning entries will be presented in a publication showing plans, photographs and texts and exhibited at FSB in Cologne at the IAKS stand
