IOC/IAKS AWARD: project of the month

The oldest velodrome in the world in Erfurt has immense significance for cycling fans. Planners were accordingly sensitive when modernising the track and the oval's roof.

The design chosen not only provides cycling fans with protection from the elements, but also gives cycling in Erfurt a new structural identity. Even when viewed from far away, the powerfully projecting steel supports show that a great deal of energy is being expended in the interior of this sports facility. With its translucent membrane roof, a visually appealing roofing material which stays in the background has been chosen. The almost uninspiring design of the roof leaves no-one in doubt that sports are to the forefront here. An attractive training and competition atmosphere has been successfully created here with simple and precise architectural elements.
